Supporting cultural safety, healing and recovery 

In this important role, you will support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit by providing culturally safe, respectful and community informed care. Working closely with clinicians, Elders, families, carers and community organisations to help ensure consumers feel supported, understood and culturally safe throughout their rehabilitation journey. 

About the Role 
As a key member of the Cultural Assessment and Liaison Team within the Rehabilitation Program Area, you will: 

  • Provide culturally appropriate guidance and assistance in assessment and treatment planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people receiving care  
  • Support and advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families and carers throughout their care and recovery journey 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations and other key stakeholders 
  • Provide cultural advice and guidance to clinical teams across the service 
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external service providers and community groups to support culturally appropriate programs that contribute to healing and rehabilitation 

Your work will strengthen cultural safety, support recovery focused care, improve engagement, and contribute to better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people accessing secure mental health rehabilitation services. 

Salary and benefits

  • Base salary: $77,342 to $106,358 per annum (HWF3) 
  • Annual leave: 4-6 weeks per year with 14%-17.5% leave loading

Requirements 

Under s25 of the Anti‑Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community. 

You will hold one of the following qualifications: 

For appointment between HWF3.1 – HWF3.5: 

  • Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, OR 
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, OR 
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health, OR 
  • Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs 

For appointment between HWF3.2 – HWF3.7 (or HWF3.8 limited to employees who meet the requirements of HED 04/23): 

  • Diploma of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, OR 
  • Diploma of Mental Health, OR 
  • Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs 

Applicants who do not do not hold the Certification IV qualification but believe they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the role as outlined  and are willing commit to completing the qualifications are encouraged to apply and may be appointed at the HWF3 (no qualification) level for a fixed term (temporary), subject to engaging and participating in a learning agreement to obtain the required qualification with support under HR Policy G10 Study and Research Assistance Scheme (SARAS). Upon completion of your qualification, you will be progressed to a Permanent HWF3.1.
