AUSTRAC is hiring two positions to join the Data Strategy and Collections branch, where our focus is strengthening the agency's enterprise data governance strategy, and maximising the value of our data in achieving regulatory and intelligence priorities This recruitment process will be used to fill current vacancies and build a merit pool for future roles.

As a key data leader of the Data Division, your specialist data expertise and oversight across data capability initiatives will cultivate AUSTRAC's data governance strategy and culture.

Director, Data Strategy and Delivery 

You will be responsible for the coordination, alignment and delivery of AUSTRAC's strategic data capability initiatives to support data integrity, continuous enhancement and seamless integration. Your role is critical in ensuring high-quality, consistent data is available within AUSTRAC's regulatory and intelligence functions. You will influence and guide various stakeholders in integrating data outcomes in portfolio projects, while instilling best practice data governance and management principles. As a decisive and people-focussed leader, you will nurture a high-performing team of data professionals to deliver high-quality, operational data capabilities which are critical to support AUSTRAC's regulatory and intelligence operations. 

Key duties include: 

  • Design, develop and maintain AUSTRAC’s data initiatives and plans to ensure accurate and consistent data is available for AUSTRAC’s regulatory and intelligence functions. 
  • Product management of strategic data initiatives to align with AUSTRAC’s Reform and Transformation priorities, ensuring effective risk managemnet, governance pracices and sustainability. 
  • Lead cross-functional teams to design and deliver data plans and other strategic initiatives within cloud-based data integration architectures—including ETL and streaming processes, APIs, and data warehouse systems, and facilitate the democratisation and sharing of data with internal and external partners. 
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders to elicit business needs and design strategic data solutions that enable their use in analysis, business intelligence, and data science; overseeing the translation of these into data plans, projects, and initiatives. 

Director, Data Governance 

Your focus will be establishing and ensuring adherence to AUSTRAC's data governance frameworks, with the goal of optimising the use and flow of data whilst ensuring our data is safe and secure. Your role will be pivotal in managing controls to drive actionable data for intelligence, regulatory operations, and corporate needs. You will serve as a point of escalation for governance, data quality and protection issues and will work closely with agency leadership to improve the quality and value of core data assets. As a trusted, governance leader, you will build agency-wide understanding of data governance and lead a high-performing team to embed these practices across the agency.  

Key duties include:  

  • Lead the design, implementation and continuous improvement of AUSTRAC’s enterprise data governance framework, including AI governance and assurance activities, ensuring alignment with whole-of-government requirements and responsible use of AI and automated systems. 
  • Oversee stewardship and data lifecycle practices across the agency to ensure data is well managed, high quality, and fit-for-purpose.  
  • Oversee the AI Impact Assessment process and provide strategic advice on emerging data and technology risks. 
  • Oversee governance of AUSTRAC’s data sharing arrangements, MOUs and access frameworks to ensure compliance with legislative and policy obligations. 
  • Represent AUSTRAC in whole-of-government data governance forums and contribute to cross-agency initiatives that require coordinated data management and policy alignment. 
  • Prepare high-quality briefings, plans and risk assessments for senior executives and governance committees, and support uplift in data literacy and responsible data practices across AUSTRAC.

This recruitment process will initially be used to fill a current vacancy and in future, may be used to fill similar positions in the event positions become vacant. The merit pools established from this recruitment process will be valid for 18 months from the date of advertising.
