About the opportunity 

The Specialist, Media Officer provides media and communications support to the media unit, who aim to position AUSTRAC as effective, trustworthy and accountable. The Specialist works closely with AUSTRAC’s media managers and other communications teams to develop and implement media and communication strategies that meet the goals and strategic objectives of the agency. The media unit is responsible for monitoring media and following issues relevant to AUSTRAC as well as developing media material, drafting speeches, website news articles, and talking points. The Specialist is part of a team that helps build AUSTRAC’s authorising environment, educating and informing the public and its stakeholders about AUSTRAC’s role and activities.

This role requires a media practitioner who can understand and shape complex information into clear and relevant content for audiences across the media landscape. The role requires someone familiar with media production processes and media deadlines, who copes well under the pressure of these deadlines while navigating approval and clearance processes. 

The Media and Internal Communications team is part of the Office of the CEO branch. The media unit manages public affairs through media engagement and implements proactive media strategies that support AUSTRAC’s objectives and help raise awareness of its work. The Specialist role reports to a media manager, but provides support to the unit as a whole with a focus on maintaining a calendar of media activities, ensuring alignment with changes to upcoming regulatory and intelligence activities, daily media monitoring, and reporting and cross referencing issues management activities with other teams.

Key Duties

The Specialist, Media Officer, under limited direction, is responsible for a combination of the following duties:

  • Assist in the development of proactive media strategies that support AUSTRAC’s operational and strategic objectives.
  • Monitoring and recording media issues, trends and potential opportunities or risks.
  • Drafting and coordinating a range of media materials including media releases, op-eds, website articles, talking points, speeches and responses to media enquiries.
  • Maintaining a content calendar and staying on top of moving dates and components.
  • Building and maintaining working relationships with internal staff, journalists, other government agencies and ministerial offices.

 

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this role you:

  • Must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply.
  • Will need to undertake AUSTRAC’s pre-engagement checks.
  • Will need to obtain and maintain an ongoing Negative Vetting 1 Clearance
