About the opportunity 

The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) is Australia’s financial intelligence unit and the anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing regulator. Our purpose is to build resilience in the financial system and use financial intelligence and regulation to disrupt money laundering, terrorism financing and other serious crime.

AUSTRAC’s Enforcement Team investigates serious and/or systemic non-compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 and takes formal enforcement action in response to identified breaches. Enforcement action can include civil penalty proceedings, infringement notices and administrative actions such as remedial directions requiring entities to take specified action to ensure compliance. In criminal investigations, it includes making referrals to and supporting the Director of Public Prosecutions.

AUSTRAC’s Enforcement team is seeking Senior Officer’s with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas: regulatory compliance, investigations or enforcement.

  • Identify, Analyse and Assess Compliance Issues - Has sound research and analytical skills and the ability to monitor and analyse data to identify compliance issues.
  • Investigate and Gather Evidence - Produces a range of analysis relevant to planned objectives under limited general direction.
  • Apply Legislation and Exercise Statutory Powers - Apply understanding of the legislative process and common law to analyse and interpret statutory provisions.

 

Key Duties

Under the direction of a Specialist, the Senior Officer will be responsible for the following responsibilities:

  1. Supporting senior staff to triage, assess and investigate alleged non-compliance with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (Cth) (the AML/CTF Act).
  2. Undertaking data collection and initial analysis to identify potential breaches of the AML/CTF Act, and contributing to the development of recommendations under guidance.
  3. Assisting with the development of strategies for responding to serious compliance issues, and assisting with the execution of those strategies (which may include formal enforcement action).
  4. Contributing to multi-disciplinary teams and problem-solving exercises relating to regulatory challenges.
  5. Liaising with internal and external stakeholders including AUSTRAC management, reporting entities, partner agencies and other parts of government.
  6. Supporting the conduct of civil penalty proceedings.

 

Eligibility 

To be eligible for this role you:

  • Must be an Australian citizen at the time you apply.
  • Will need to undertake AUSTRAC’s pre-engagement checks.
  • Will need to obtain and maintain an ongoing Baseline Clearance
