About the Opportunity
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Aboriginal Health Worker to join our Drug Health Services team. This pivotal role involves providing culturally safe and sensitive support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals affected by drug and alcohol addiction. What You'll be Doing
The Senior Aboriginal Health Worker (AHW) attached to the SWSLHD Aboriginal Health Team will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide culturally responsive care navigation and support a range of therapeutic and psychosocial interventions for Aboriginal clients and their families who are dealing with issues related to substance use. The Senior AHW will have a range of leadership responsibilities related to ensuring the cultural integrity of the service model and supporting staff within the Team to ensure that they are delivering culturally responsive care.

  1. This is an Identified Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Position. Applicants for this position must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and being accepted in the community as such. Exemption is claimed under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  2. Cert IV Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Care or other relevant qualifications and /or relevant experience working within Aboriginal Health programs. Current unrestricted Australian drivers licence (P2 Licence Acceptable) subject to obtaining NSW drivers licence within 3 months of appointment.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of the causative factors related to drug and alcohol misuse within Aboriginal communities and the principles that underpin Aboriginal Health service provision.
  4. Ability to undertake health/social needs assessments that demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Aboriginal culture and social issues.
  5. Demonstrated experience working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide culturally responsive care coordination or case management services to Aboriginal clients with substance use issues.
  6. Demonstrated ability to play a leadership role within a multi-disciplinary team and develop linkages with a range of stakeholders to support referral pathways.
  7. Demonstrated ability to inform and support the development of culturally responsive Aboriginal health programs and services and their implementation.
  8. Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills and computer literacy.
  9. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
