The opportunity

  • Bring your science leadership and land surface modelling skills to a varied role
  • Exciting ongoing role working on an impactful national research initiative
  • Grow your research career with CSIRO – Australia’s National Science Agency!

The Australian Earth-System Simulator National Research Infrastructure (ACCESS-NRI) is a strategic initiative to support the ongoing development and research with the Australian community, addressing national climate mitigation and adaptation challenges. For years, CSIRO has been leading the development of the land surface modelling suite, CABLE, specifically designed for Australia’s unique landscapes. CSIRO is currently looking to enhance this component, and we’re seeking an experienced land surface modeller to join our talented, multi-disciplinary team in an exciting, ongoing role!

In this role, you will be an integral part of our ‘Land Surface and Ocean Biogeochemistry’ team in the Modelling the Earth System group of CSIRO’s Climate Science Centre. The team’s research focuses on land carbon-cycle interactions and the role of the terrestrial biosphere in carbon mitigation and management. Bringing your scientific expertise into the team, you will work with a technically-advanced team, and play a hands-on strategic role leading the further development of the land surface component in the Australian Earth System Model (ACCESS-ESM), efficiently addressing key science & policy issues, and improving CSIRO’s capabilities and its role as a national science leader.

If you enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary team environment, forming collaborative partnerships, bringing a fresh perspective to research initiatives, and leading the way to make a real difference with your work, this would be an exciting and fulfilling role for you! CSIRO champions a diverse and inclusive culture, supports flexible work arrangements, and offers excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills and career.

Your duties will include:

  • Using professional expertise, research experience and achievement to formulate, develop and lead an approved research program focussed on the application of ACCESS-ESM to land-surface, climate and carbon science questions.
  • Developing challenging but realistic research plans and negotiating resource requirements with research managers or clients, in order to implement additional high-priority capabilities into CABLE in ACCESS-ESM, such as dynamic vegetation, disturbance and fire.
  • Demonstrating a considerable degree of originality, creativity and innovation in solving problems and introduce new directions and approaches.
  • Communicating research results to clients and the scientific community through journal publications, oral and written reports and preparing documentation.
  • Leading a cross-institutional project team to ensure model development and experiments are established in accordance with the research design and are completed within the agreed timeframes and budget.
  • Acting as a trusted advisor, utilising knowledge of the clients’ business and understanding of their underlying needs.
