The opportunity

The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.

In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.

The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.

The SKA-Low Station Configuration Specialist is a key member of the Low Station Deployment Team and will be responsible for configuration management activities during the station construction phase.  These activities include baseline management, configuration identification and engineering change management of the SKA-Low stations. 

 

Your duties will include:

  • Maintaining the correct as-installed configuration for SKA-Low stations and communicating this to other parts of the Observatory.

  • Creating procedures to comply with SKA’s configuration management guidelines.

  • Reviewing technical outputs for compliance with specified standards.

  • Applying technical knowledge to solve problems at the SKA-Low station level.

  • Collaborating with stakeholders for coordination and collaborative working.

 

Location:     Geraldton, Western Australia

Salary:         AU$110,038 - AU$119,080 plus 15.4% superannuation

Tenure:        4-year Specified Term – Full-Time, Part-Time or Job-Share

To be considered you will need:

 Essential

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant engineering discipline or significant equivalent experience.

  • Experience and training in Configuration Management, including using tools for system engineering lifecycle baselines, such as ALIM.

  • Experience in managing and administration of CMMS platforms (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems).

  • Demonstrable experience in formal baseline control, product breakdown structures, documentation management, as-built configuration management, and configuration audits.

  • Proven relationship-building skills and experience as the first point of stakeholder contact, providing consultative advice.

  • Strong verbal and business writing skills, able to summarize technical data for non-specialists, and effective teamwork and communication abilities.

 

Desirable

  • Knowledge of current external issues, including legislative, regulatory, and best practice standards, that impact configuration management.

  • Experience and training with the SAE EIA-649C standard for configuration management.

  • Understanding of project management concepts, with a strong planning and organisational skills, and project management experience.
