The Opportunity
The Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) project is on a mission to build the world’s largest radio telescopes. In order to fully exploit the scientific output of the immense amount of data flowing from the telescopes, the SKAO is working with science communities across the world through SKA Regional Centres, which are nationally lead hubs that form the basis of a global compute and science support infrastructure. The Australian SKA Regional Centre (AusSRC) is Australia’s portion of this international network to establish and build capability to support the Australian and international SKA science communities, thereby ushering in the next era of astronomical discovery and advanced data processing.
For the next few years of the AusSRC program, focus will be on facilitating and enhancing the scientific output of Australian SKA Precursors: the Murchison Widefield Array and the Australian SKA Pathfinder.
Working with science teams as well as local resource providers, the AusSRC will help to develop scalable post-processing and data analysis strategies and automated workflows that could eventually be applied to data from the SKA telescopes.
In this key leadership role, you will have the opportunity to guide and expand the AusSRC to support the next era of radio astronomy. As the Head of Operations, you will provide vision and leadership for the long-term AusSRC program objectives.
Key areas your role will involve:
- Recruiting and working with a diverse team of computing and operations personnel who will be able to find innovative solutions for challenges arising from this new phase in astronomical research and advanced data processing.
- Participating in the development and expansion of the international SRC Network that will enable transformational science from the entire SKA community.
- Connecting and liaising with stakeholders to build trusting, collaborating, and effective working relationships.
Your duties will include:
- Working as one of the senior personnel in the AusSRC management team, providing vision and leadership for the overall program and an individual team of 5 -10 personnel.
- Leading the effort for securing access to dedicated compute and storage from national resource providers.
- Managing contracts with vendors (e.g. development platforms, telecommunication companies, password managers) and software licenses.
- Ensuring backend support for AusSRC and science users’ pipelines and workflows that will enable post-processing and analysis of data from the MWA, ASKAP, and eventually the SKA telescopes.
- Participating in the development and verification of the international SRC Network and SKA Science Data Archive, particularly through ensuring that the AusSRC has the proper infrastructure and compute/storage access to support the global network.
- Establishing links, developing strategies and collaborative projects with Australian hardware and infrastructure companies that can assist with achieving the above goals.

To be considered you will need:
Essential
- A degree or equivalent relevant work experience in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or related field.
- Experience leading computing development and/or operational teams with an understanding of high-performance computing systems.
- Good motivational skills and strong organisational skills.
- The ability to communicate openly, effectively, and respectfully with personnel, stakeholders, and external agencies in the interests of good business practice, collaboration, and enhancement of the AusSRC’s reputation.
Desirable
- A record of successful leadership and management of teams, promoting diversity and developing an inclusive, high-performing culture, including recruitment, capability development and performance management.
- Experience with computing hardware acquisition and systems management.
- Knowledge or interest in astronomy.
