The opportunity
The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics. Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond.
In Australia, the SKAO is collaborating with CSIRO to operate and support the construction of the low frequency telescope (SKA-Low) in remote Western Australia on Wajarri Yamaji Country.
The Traditional Owners and native title holders, the Wajarri Yamaji, have gifted CSIRO with the traditional name Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara for the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, home to the SKA-Low telescope. The traditional name means ‘sharing sky and stars’ in the Wajarri language.
Working under the direction of the SKA-Low Communications and Engagement Manager, based in Perth, the Communications and Outreach Advisor will help to develop and deliver communications, events and outreach activities to promote the SKAO and the SKA-Low telescope in Australia and internationally. With a focus on local and national stakeholders, you will look for innovative and impactful ways to engage with the community, and build and maintain successful relationships with relevant stakeholders, particularly local communities, schools, partners, and industry.
Your duties will include:

Contribute to the development and delivery of integrated communication plans that leverage media relations, digital and social content, event management and marketing communications to promote SKA-Low and the SKAO both in Australia and internationally.

Collaborate on and, where required, lead outreach activities including media and VIP visits to SKAO facilities, industry events, conferences, education programs and public events.

Where required, lead small project teams to deliver communication plans, influencing and negotiating with stakeholders to deliver impact.

Contribute to the implementation of the SKA-Low communication strategy, ensuring alignment with the broader SKAO global communications strategy.

Build and maintain relationships with local communities, Traditional Owners, public organisations, government, local and national collaborating organisations and industry to support communications and outreach activities.

Salary: AU$93,267 - AU$105,517 plus 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential

A relevant tertiary qualification and / or relevant experience.
-
Practical experience leading or coordinating events and/or outreach activities.
-
Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of communications activities, with strong skills and experience in areas such as media relations, public relations, government affairs, digital content creation, event management and/or marketing.

Ability to build and maintain excellent collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders that help to achieve positive outcomes.
-
Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities with competing deadlines, showing initiative, self-motivation and flexibility.
-
High-level problem solving and judgment skills, including the ability to anticipate, identify and manage risks and to develop evidenced-based appropriate solutions.
Desirable

Experience in graphic design or proficiency in graphic design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite or similar.

Experience building relationships with local and Indigenous communities, or interest in working with traditional landowners.

Knowledge or experience in working with organisations that have an astronomy, engineering, science or related focus.
