Life at CSIRO Energy and our Research Programs

As the national science agency, we solve the nation’s greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Sustainability is at the core of many of these challenges and our overall purpose.

The energy sector in Australia is undergoing a major transition, and its key components – electricity, industry, transport and exports – are all rapidly evolving to enable Australia's transition to a net-zero emissions energy future. Our ‘Energy’ research portfolio is structured around three vital Research Programs, combining multi-disciplinary energy knowledge, skills and research capability, and closely collaborating with industry and other CSIRO’s Business Units.

  • ‘Energy Systems’ Research Program – addresses the challenge of transitioning Australia's current centralised electricity grid system to a low-emissions, more distributed future state, while maintaining energy affordability and reliability.
  • ‘Energy Technologies’ Research Program – conducts analysis, modelling, design, development and demonstration activities to support the deployment of high-efficiency, low-emission energy technologies, utilising resources from coal to renewable energy sources.
  • ‘Energy Resources’ Research Program – develops sustainable and economically-viable pathways to transition Australia away from fossil fuels in domestic and export markets using hydrogen, biofuels, carbon capture, utilization and storage and the integration of renewable energy.
