The SKA Observatory (SKAO) is a next-generation radio astronomy facility that will revolutionise our understanding of the Universe and the laws of fundamental physics.
Enabled by cutting-edge technology, it promises to have a major impact on society, in science and beyond. 
CSIRO is collaborating with SKAO in the construction and operation phases of the SKA-Low Telescope here in Western Australia. The CSIRO Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) Team in Perth is growing and are now seeking a Network and Computing Technician to join the team based in the Kensington office.

As a Network and Computing Technician, you will support all AIV related installation, connection, testing and verification activities for the SKA-Low Telescope computing and network infrastructure in Perth and at the Site. The role will be based at the SKAO Science Operations Centre in Perth, and will involve some travel to Inyarrimanha Ilgari Bundara, the CSIRO Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory on Wajarri Yamaji Country, the SKAO Engineering Operation Centre in Geraldton and occasionally other SKAO facilities.

The position will initially sit within the AIV Team to support integration and verification during construction but then transition to operations support within the SKA-Low Telescope team.

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the deployment, configuration, and support of computing and software platforms and networking infrastructure for the SKA-Low Telescope.
  • Providing technical support for the Computing and Networking Services including incident support and resolution during Integration and Verification activities.
  • Supporting the integration and verification of the networking and computing infrastructure as part of the SKA Low System level testing.
  • Working with, and support, AIV team members to identify and define hardware, software, and system level issues in the network and computing infrastructure for the system under test. 
  • Supporting and maintaining asset and configuration management records for the installations.
  • Contributing to the development and improvement of user guides, training documentation and troubleshooting guides.
  • Facilitating procurement of network and computing components and other tools to support the installation and maintenance activities.
  • Attending after hours breakdowns and working flexible hours as required. 
  • Other duties as directed.


Location: Perth, WA

Salary: AU$93,267- AU$105,517 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:


  • A relevant Certificate, Diploma or equivalent training and experience in IT, Networks and Computing.
  • Ability to investigate IT and networking problems by identifying and considering the implications of a range of available alternative solutions.
  • Hands on experience in installation and maintenance of computing and network equipment and services.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices.



  • Knowledge and experience with integrating and testing equipment into systems.
  • Knowledge and/or background with IT Service Management disciplines and Frameworks such as ITIL and/or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
  • Experience in software programming in Python / C++ for test and automation script development. 
  • Have or be willing to obtain a current Open cabling licence for WA.
  • Experience of working with system authentication, authorisation and accounting (AAA)
  • Experience in supporting the procurement, configuration and asset management of network and computing environments.
  • Experience in Linux application server administration, computer hardware, virtualisation and/or data centre infrastructure management.
