The opportunity

  • Bring your expertise in superconducting qubits to an exciting project on quantum batteries
  • Collaborate with Australia’s leading scientists and government & industry partners
  • Join CSIRO – Australia’s Premier Science Agency – and grow your research career!

Quantum technology holds the potential to help solve some of society's greatest challenges, such as accelerated development in healthcare, enhanced national security and defence, improved mineral exploration and water resource management, more secure communications, efficient energy storage, and exciting new technologies and incredibly powerful computation like quantum computing. That's why, as Australia’s National Science Agency, CSIRO is committed to playing our role in this emerging industry by building infrastructure and research capability, and ensuring quantum produces equitable outcomes for society.

In line with this, one of the key research initiatives in CSIRO is contributing to the experimental development of quantum batteries with circuit quantum electrodynamics (circuit QED), as they are expected to revolutionise energy storage. Joining our talented, multi-disciplinary ‘Quantum Batteries’ research team in this exciting and varied role, you will have a strong experimental background in superconducting qubits, and will play a key role supporting the research project with experimentation and designing fabricating samples. On a regular basis, you will collaborate closely with lab staff and other researchers, and be responsible for building the necessary experimental setup and maintaining the standards, realising the measurement routines, and performing necessary data analysis. Your role will be strategically important in CSIRO’s quantum strategy and enhancing our research capabilities in this domain. Therefore, this role also offers growth opportunities and a great platform to further develop your research.

If you are a Research Scientist wanting to take the next step in your career, are motivated by experimentation and trying out different approaches, and contributing to making a real difference with your work, we would love to hear from you! CSIRO champions in providing a diverse and inclusive culture, supports feasible flexible work arrangements, and offers you excellent professional development opportunities to grow your skills & career.

Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carrying out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
  • Selecting the most profitable line of attack upon a problem, and preparing detailed design proposals and experimental protocols.
  • Undertaking experimental and/or observational research activities, and supervising/training others to ensure experiments are established in accordance with research design.
  • Drawing on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.
  • Presenting results in a meaningful format, preparing reports for clients and/or writing scientific papers for publication.
  • Other duties as directed and necessary for the successful completion of research activities.

Location: Brisbane (St Lucia), QLD and Melbourne (Clayton), VIC

Salary: AU$110K – AU$119K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years

Reference: 96579

To be considered you will need:

  • A PhD, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience, in a relevant field such as experimental quantum physics.
  • Experience in one or some of the following areas: mK temperature microwave measurements, nanofabrication of quantum devices.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating and pursuing novel ideas and solutions to scientific research problems.
  • A demonstrated publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications.
  • Desirable: Demonstrated expertise in experimenting in circuit QED is highly desirable.
