APS Level 6

Darwin, Northern Territory

Position overview

Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased economic impact, vulnerability, and potential magnitude of harm. To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology is undertaking significant steps to deliver a more customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operation. This is an exciting direction for the Bureau which will change the way we deliver services to Australian communities. The operating model for the Bureau has created new career pathways to enhance our culture, to empower our people to learn and grow. As part of this transformation, we are introducing new roles that will assist the Bureau in delivering world class weather products and services within the newly formed Community Services Group (CSG).

This group is comprised of Decision Support Services (DSS), Environmental Prediction Services (EPS), and National Production Services (NPS) enabling scalable, national, and resilient services. The DSS program will lead customer engagement within CSG with an overarching mission to deliver tailored, relevant, and timely information to enable better decision making. The DSS program is characterised by its shared understanding of the impact that weather, water, climate, and oceans have on the decisions that Bureau customers make every day. Operating with a national capability, the program will be accountable for leading engagement with the Australian community and the Emergency Management sector. This will be delivered by two dedicated teams: Hazard Preparedness and Response (HPR) and Community Engagement (CE).

The Decision Support Officers will be based in all capital cities and will report to the HPR Manager in each State or Territory. The successful candidates will have a unique opportunity to help grow the Bureau’s Decision Support Services for the Hazard Preparedness and Response sector and support Emergency Management partners in each jurisdiction.

To be successful in this role, you will display a dedicated curiosity and comprehensive understanding of how the evolving weather, flood, ocean, and climate landscape impact emergency management and first responder communities. You will require a sound understanding of (or capacity to develop) in meteorology, hydrology, climatology and/or oceanography.

We are a diverse team with skills from varied scientific, operational and community services backgrounds, and seek the right candidate who demonstrates a commitment to collaboration and building partnerships and relationships with both internal and external customers and partners.

The role is responsible for the continuous improvement activities of delivering and sharing Bureau products and information with Emergency Management partners. You are a key contributor to the provision of clearly communicated expert advice, interpreting impacts, timing, uncertainty and risks by connecting climate, weather and water information to customer's decisions to help them effectively mitigate risks. In collaboration across the Bureau's Community Services and Business Solutions Group teams in the Bureau, you will work with our partner agencies to ensure hazard and impact information of value and impact is expressed in our products and customer services, and within the local and national weather narrative.

The successful candidate will be committed to supporting the Bureau and our partners outside the scope of standard working hours during severe weather events or peak periods. During such periods, you will contribute to support the needs of our customers and emergency management partners – as such, the successful candidate may be able or required to carry out their duties remotely, with limited supervision.
