Do you have a background in organic chemistry, and an interest in working on impactful industry projects? We are currently seeking a knowledgeable and motivated Bioconjugation Chemist to join us in a multi-faceted, ongoing role! 

 

Our ‘Bioconjugates and Biomaterials’ Team has vital importance in CSIRO’s Biomedical Manufacturing Program. Joining this talented team, you will play a crucial role in delivering commercial/industry-related projects and contributing to developing new products, processes and solutions for the biomedical industry, specifically related to bioconjugation chemistry. Applying your established synthetic organic chemistry knowledge and analytical skills, this lab-based role will see you working on isolation, identification, synthesis, and purification of organic compounds, including modifying biomolecules and applying organic chemistry knowledge to perform bioconjugation reactions with polymers and proteins.

Your duties will include:

  • Performing straightforward experiments and routine laboratory analyses, which may include applying organic chemistry to protein and polymer chemistry, and may include simple biochemistry assays.
  • Monitoring chemical reactions using chromatographic techniques, such as TLC, HPLC, SEC, LCMS, IEX and SDS-PAGE.
  • Preparing and purifying compounds using chromatographic techniques such as column chromatography, SEC and HPLC.
  • Using NMR and mass spectroscopy to elucidate the structure of organic compounds.
  • Communicating research results through electronic laboratory notebooks, written reports and oral presentations.
  • Undertaking general laboratory maintenance, which may include having responsibility for maintaining/stocking laboratory consumables, waste management, inventory management and instrument scheduling.

 

Location: Melbourne (Clayton), VIC

Salary: AU$68K – AU$86K pa + up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree, preferably with an Honour’s or Master’s in organic chemistry or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability in the techniques of synthetic organic chemistry, and strong analytical skills and experience with analytical instrumentation (e.g., NMR, MS). Additional experience in chromatographic separation techniques, such as HPLC, column chromatography and SEC, and experience handling proteins, would be beneficial.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks under general direction from Scientific Researchers.
  • Proven ability to investigate routine problems by identifying and considering the implications of a range of available alternative solutions, with a proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
