The Opportunity
CSIRO’s Data61 is the data and digital specialist arm of Australia’s national science agency. Data61 is at the forefront of digital science and innovation, leading both in developing new applied research and technologies as well as working across disciplines to drive adoption and impact.
As part of the Software Engineering for AI (SE4AI) research team, this position will carry out world-class research to advance knowledge in AI for Science. More specifically, these technologies provide data visualisation and analytics to accelerate scientific discovery.
Your duties will include:
- Under the supervision of more senior researchers, assist in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
- Select the most profitable line of attack upon a problem, prepare detailed design proposals and experimental protocols.
- Draw on professional expertise, knowledge of other disciplines and research experience to recognise opportunities for innovation and generate new theoretical perspectives by pursuing new ideas/approaches and networking with scientific colleagues across a range of disciplines.
- Participate in identification of further opportunities which arise from research and initiate new lines of research.
- Undertake activities focused on one or more elements of larger research projects.
- Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.
- Provide supervision and coaching to students.
- Communicate openly, effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary research team to carry out tasks in support of CSIRO’s scientific objectives.
- Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Code of Conduct, Health, Safety and Environment procedures and policy, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.
- Other duties as directed.
Location: Sydney, NSW
Salary: AU$121,455 - AU$142,321 per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar.
- Demonstrated ability to undertake original, creative and innovative research by generating novel solutions and developing research prototypes.
- Knowledge of and experience with data visualisation and analytics.
- Experience to work effectively in a research team and provide supervision and mentoring to research students.
- Demonstrated high level of oral and written communication skills with the ability to represent Data61 research externally to both academia, government and industry.
Desirable:
- Research engineering experience in one or more of the following fields: data visualisation and analytics.
