The role of Mechanical Apprentice in CSIRO is to provide support over a four-year period for scientific research across a range of different research projects.  You will assist the Cotton Breeding program in the machining, cutting, welding and assembly of a variety of materials and components to certain specifications.  


An apprenticeship means you learn practical on-the-job skills as well as formal learning with an approved provider and get a nationally recognised qualification you can use anywhere. You will undergo training in the field of agricultural mechanics under the guidance of skilled trades persons and attend TAFE college on week block release, with the goal of achieving Certificate 3 in Agricultural Mechanical Technology. Your duties will include:

  • The duties on commencement and throughout the apprenticeship will be directed towards work place competencies appropriate to an agricultural mechanist, through on the job training and the successful completion of a Certificate 3 Agricultural Mechanical Technology.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all staff, clients and suppliers in the interests of good business practice, collaboration and enhancement of CSIRO’s reputation.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, to carry out tasks under the direction of Senior Technical staff.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues within your team, the business unit and across CSIRO, to reach objectives.
  • Provide instruction and assist other staff to complete allocated tasks and activities, as required.
  • Provide instruction on activities pertaining to the immediate work area and responsibilities, as required.
  • Adapt techniques, procedures/equipment/ concepts/ideas in support of existing and further research.
  • Adhere to the spirit and practice of CSIRO’s Values, Health, Safety and Environment plans and policies, Diversity initiatives and Zero Harm goals.

Salary:  AU$29,202 (1st year starting salary) up to 52,563 (4th year of apprenticeship), plus up to 15.4% superannuation.

To be considered you will need:

  • Certificate of high school education and/or relevant work experience in agriculture or mechanical related industries.
  • Ability to travel to and from the CSIRO Myall Vale site and to the appropriate TAFE College, based in Dubbo.
  • Secondary education sufficient to allow entry to appropriate vocational certificate course, including passes in English, Maths and Science.
  • Aptitude for practical manipulation and theoretical study as demonstrated by previous interests, hobbies and achievements at school.
  • Evidence of initiative, self-motivation and curiosity.
  • Capable of working effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, regionally dispersed research team, and carry out tasks under the direction of Senior Technical Staff.
  • The ability & willingness to contribute novel ideas and approaches in support of scientific investigations.
  • Successful completion of at least five years secondary schooling or participation in a pre-apprenticeship program and an agreement to study for a Certificate of Agricultural Mechanical Technology is desirable.
