How are we working towards Australia’s energy transition to a net zero future

  • Impactful Work: As Australia's national science agency, CSIRO is well positioned to support Australian government and industry in catalysing Australia's energy transition towards net zero emissions. By bringing together research, industry, government, and communities, we are actively building Australia’s national capability to prosper and grow in a global low emissions world through new economic, societal and environmental value.

  • Valuable Industry Partnerships: We partner with local and global companies to deliver energy solutions for a sustainable future, and we also work with state and federal governments, universities, research agencies and industry groups.

  • State-of-the-art Infrastructure: At CSIRO, we manage and make available a range of world-class labs and facilities to enable scientific research and technology development. Our ‘Renewable Energy Integration Facility’ (REIF),  ‘Centre for Hybrid Energy Systems’ (CHES), and  ‘Stored Energy Integration Facility’ (SEIF) are all outstanding facilities supported by experts in the respective fields, creating collaboration hubs for researchers and industry.

  • Collaborations with Multi-disciplinary Teams: We provide opportunities to seamlessly work across various disciplines, in a truly collaborative environment, supporting diverse scientific research. We are committed to continuously building a diverse, inclusive and flexible working environment where all our people are supported to do their best work and feel empowered to let their ideas flourish. We are dedicated to values-based leadership to inspire performance and unlock potential.

Life at ‘CSIRO Energy’ and Our Research Programs

As the national science agency, we solve the nation’s greatest challenges through innovative science and technology. Sustainability is at the core of many of these challenges and our overall purpose.

The energy sector in Australia is undergoing a major transition, and its key components – electricity, industry, transport and exports – are all rapidly evolving to enable Australia's transition to a net-zero emissions energy future. Our ‘Energy’ research portfolio is structured around three vital Research Programs, combining multi-disciplinary energy knowledge, skills and research capability, and closely collaborating with industry and other CSIRO’s Business Units.

  • ‘Energy Systems’ Research Program – addresses the challenge of transitioning Australia's current centralised electricity grid system to a low-emissions, more distributed future state, while maintaining energy affordability and reliability.
  • ‘Energy Technologies’ Research Program – conducts analysis, modelling, design, development and demonstration activities to support the deployment of high-efficiency, low-emission energy technologies, utilising resources from coal to renewable energy sources.
  • ‘Energy Resources’ Research Program – focuses on identifying and enabling new opportunities for the sustainable development and processing of Australia's conventional, primarily offshore, oil and gas energy resources and onshore gas. This includes addressing poorly understood environmental and social impacts.
